Beat Battles: Overtune's music studio hits a million players on Roblox

When Overtune first told us they were building a music studio inside Roblox, the idea was disarmingly simple: take the sequencer engine they've spent years refining, and drop it into the biggest social playground on the internet.

A few weeks after launch, over a million people have played it.

The experience is called Beat Battles, and Roblox has selected it for Standout Games — a hand-picked, rotating slot on the front page of a platform with more than a hundred million daily users. Only a small number of experiences hold that spot at any given time, and Roblox chooses them itself. As far as we know, Beat Battles is the first Icelandic-made experience of its kind, built in direct collaboration with Roblox.

Beat Battles isn't a rhythm game where you tap arrows in time. It's a music creation and competition game:

• Remix tracks using loops
• Write your own melodies in a built-in Piano Roll
• Battle friends on stage, live
• Vote on the best performances
• Climb the in-game billboards as your production levels up

Underneath it all sits Overtune's Sequencer technology — the same engine behind their mobile app. That's the part we find genuinely clever. Most music tools ask you to take creation seriously before you've made anything. Beat Battles makes it a social act first: you're performing, competing, and being voted on, and you happen to be producing music while you do it. Whether you're on stage or in the crowd, you're part of it.

The early numbers back that up: 465,508 monthly active users and 162,015 daily active users.

Huge congratulations to the whole Overtune team. Getting hand-picked by Roblox is not a thing that happens by accident, and doing it from Reykjavík makes it that much better.
